Score 92/100 · Drink 2009-2015, David Schildknecht, Wine Advocate, Dec 2009

The Latour-Giraud 2007 Meursault Perrieres loaded with ripe peach buttressed by toasted nuts and crushed stone, and accented with the bitterness of peach kernel. While rich in low tones that tread near to somberness, there is an appealing slick of glycerin, and this still possesses active citrus to lend refreshment. It’s impressively dense and long, while lacking quite the savor or sex appeal of the Genevrieres. I suspect it will be worth following for half a dozen years, anyway. Jean-Pierre Latour is having none of the claim that 2007 and 2004 are similar. “2004 is about minerality, whereas 2007 is a lively vintage of fruit,” he insists, “but that didn’t become apparent until well along in the elevage. Because it was so cold over the winter,” he continues, “the wines precipitated a lot of tartaric acid, after which the malos came normally” (unlike in 2006 here) in early Spring. Latour reports healthy lees which he was happy to retain and stir to lend the wines textural richness. As a group, I found these more charming, refined, fun to drink, as well as nuanced than the 2006 collection, but white Burgundy lovers who in general preferred 2006 as a vintage should by all means check out Latour’s unusually broad, rich, and texturally pliable 2007s. Orange oil, crushed stone and spice aromas lifted by a menthol nuance. Silky on entry, then fresh, concentrated and youthfully imploded in the middle, with vibrant lemon and stone flavors framed by strong minerally acidity. Finishes brisk, lemony and a bit severe. More mineral-driven than the Perrieres but not more concentrated.

(malo finished) Slightly gruner-like aromas of citrus peel, fresh herbs and pepper. Rich and densely packed, with an impression of sweetness that belies its very low (0.8 grams per liter) residual sugar. Brisk flavors of lemon, lime and stone. This fairly rich and tactile wine is further along in its elevage and much easier to taste today than the Genevrieres (Latour says the latter wine will get to this stage). I like its balance of volume and vibrancy. Finishes rich and ripe, with lovely persistence. This was 12.7% potential alcohol, chaptalized to 13.2%.
