The 2011 Vosne-Romanee 1er Cru Malconsorts (which Mounir described as a “non-stop” i.e. mercurial) has a very classy bouquet, fine mineralite and depth. This is very complex, more so vis-a-vis the 2011 Suchots. The palate is medium-bodied with a gentle grip, very fine acidity, and bright blackberry and raspberry fruit interlaced with citrus fruit, followed by a wonderful tense, quite structured finish. This is a “serious” Malconsorts full of breeding and class. Drink 2016-2033. Prior to launching into Maison Lucien de Moine’s 2012 reds with irrepressible winemaker Mounir Saouma, we revisited some of his 2011s that are now in bottle. To recap, Mounir is one of the last Burgundy producers to bottle his wines, since he is a great believer in extended elevage. There is a clutch of outstanding wines in this vintage, particularly at the grand cru level, where one must admire the consistency across the board. As always, readers are reminded that Lucien Le Moine’s wines are made in a stringently reductive method, therefore they always need more decanting time than other growers. Bright full red. Withdrawn nose hints at raspberry, smoke, spices and underbrush. Less expressive and penetrating today than the Au Dessus de Malconsorts but plenty pungent nonetheless, offering brisk notes of red raspberry, spices and blood orange. This youthfully imploded wine finishes firmly tannic, even a bit dry, with a peppery edge but very good rising length. In need of further elevage to sort itself out.
