Inky crimson with black core. Intense black fruit with a savoury overlay. So concentrated that the fruit is smoky/savoury rather than fruity . Fruit is clearly ripe but not at all sweet. Dense and not very fragrant for a Côte Rôtie. A very dense style that I find slightly bitter/herbal on the finish. Still much too young to drink. (JH)

Brilliant, youthful purple. Highly expressive aromas of ripe raspberry and boysenberry, smoky minerals, licorice and candied flowers are accompanied by exotic spice and mineral overtones. Densely packed and animated on the palate, displaying silky texture and fine delineation to the intense, mineral-drenched red and blue fruit, floral pastille and spicecake flavors. Seamless and alluringly sweet on the impressively persistent finish, which features a resonating mineral quality that adds precision and final cut. As is the case with Villa's 2017 Saint-Joseph Tildé, which I also tasted last year just after it was bottled, this is showing even better now. The rewards of patience prove true, once again. From a 0.5-hectare parcel.

Bright purple. Vibrant black raspberry, violet pastille, licorice and smoky mineral aromas are complemented by a subtle incense nuance. Palate-staining red and blue fruit, cola and exotic spice flavors show excellent focus, and a hint of candied flowers builds in the glass. Velvety and broad on the impressively long, well-delineated finish, which is framed by velvety, slow-building tannins.
