In 2023, Les Chailloux underwent malo for the first time, which gives it a richness and roundness in the mouth. However, it lacks some of the flinty grip and tension that make this cuvée so identifiable. The 2023 is still a good wine with fine texture, balance and a touch of oak-derived spice, but it has lost that bitterness and tension that carries it through the finish.

The 2023 Les Chailloux has a sense of precision, line and focus from its flinty origins. This has substance, body and length. I love its sense of get up and go. Indeed, it's all about texture, not aromatics. This does offer delightful pastry flavors on top of ripe citrus notes. While Riffault's wines don't typically go through malo, in 2023 this cuvée completed it before the end of the alcoholic fermentation, providing flesh. Yet, this needs food or time compared to Riffault's other Sancerres.
