From a stony portion of that site near to Caillerets, Jadot’s 2006 Puligny-Montrachet Les Folatieres is sweetly scented with lilies and litchi. Spiced apple, hazelnut paste, and fresh lime emerge on a rich yet firm palate, striking a balance between almost over-the-top ripeness and exoticism, and on the other hand refreshment and vivacity, all carried into an impressively long finish. This should be worth holding for at least 4-6 years. The impressive collection of Jadot 2006s were slow both in their alcoholic fermentation and their malo-lactic evolution, which director Jacques Lardiere considered all to the good when it came to imposing structure and building complexity in wines of such ripeness and relatively high alcohol. In any case, Jadot whites seldom complete their malo-lactic transformation, and if one seeks a vintage to demonstrate the virtues of that approach, surely 2006 is the poster child. Furthermore, anyone who thinks that there are no values left in white Burgundy today has clearly not given Jadot’s wide range the attention it deserves. (These wines were assembled from barrel for my tasting and/or tasted from a range of individual barrels. I have generally made note of those wines not owned by Jadot and its associates by at least indicating whether grapes or juice were purchased.) Subdued but complex aromas of dried fruits and nutty oak; hints of white truffle, spices and violet emerged with aeration. Quite complex and fine but still tightly wound, with white fruit flavors joined on the subtle finish by fresh hazelnut and almond.

The Folatières climat lies near the summit of this slope, above Clos de la Garenne roughly midway between Meursault and Montrachet. With 17.6 hectares covering the three parcels of En La Richarde, Peux Bois and Au Chaniot in addition to the principal parcel of Les Folatières, it is the largest of Puligny’s premiers crus. Folatières is also the most recent. Cask sample. Rich and round and glamorous though a little less direct and frank than I would have expected. (JR)
