The cedar-scented 2009 Chateauneuf du Pape la Part des Anges followed the incredible Cuvée Imperiale. It's a fabulous wine, loaded with mixed berries, cola and dried spices, but it lacks the opulence and drama of the other wine, exchanging that in favor of structure. It's full-bodied, velvety and rich but somehow a bit austere at the same time. Its should continue to drink well for at least 5-6 years, possibly longer.

A step up in quality, with fantastic purity of fruit and sweeter tannin, the 2009 Domaine Raymond Usseglio & Fils Châteauneuf-du-Pape La Part des Anges is a barrel-aged blend of 70% Mourvedre, 20% Grenache, and 10% Syrah. Just gorgeous on the nose, with creamy black raspberry, graphite, candied flowers, and licorice, this full-bodied, rich, and sweetly fruited Châteauneuf-du-Pape shows only hints of its oak elevage, picking up subtle, yet very well done aromas of classy French oak with air. There’s loads of texture, excellent focus, and no shortage of length on the finish. Give bottles 5-7 years in the cellar, and then drink over the following decade or longer.

Domaine Raymond Usseglio is one of the leading producers of Châteauneuf-du-Pape, producing a number of different red and white cuvées from the appellation. The domaine’s most famous wine is their Châteauneuf-du-Pape Impériale, which comes exclusively from vines that are over 100 years old.
