Tasting notes
Although prominent reference to “Zickelgarten” has been omitted from any vintage 2017 labels, that near-monopoly of St. Urbans-Hof (at one time an official Einzellage) is the source of this Auslese. Scents and concentrated flavors of candied orange and lime peels dominate, accompanied by overtones of wet stone and smoky black tea. An oily feel helps assuage the wine’s prominent piquancy and pithy sense of concentration. The mouth-saturating, veritably mouth-shaking finish grips with near-severity, but incorporates enough juiciness to refresh, while featuring a wet stone undertone that is unusually vivid for an Auslese. Give this time!

Sourced in the old Zickelgarten parcel, the 2017 Bockstein Auslese (Long Gold Capsule, AP 44) is super clear and fresh on the well-defined, elegant and aromatic nose with fine raisin aromas. On the palate, the wine is crystalline, fresh and even piquant, with finely racy acidity. This is an excitingly complex and expressive yet delicate Bockstein Auslese with a tight, fresh and mineral finish. This is a Riesling for eternity. 280 liters produced. Tasted in April 2019.
