Moving to the last of the whites, the 2022 Chardonnay B.A. Thieriot Vineyard boasts a richer golden hue. It comes from the original block and estate vineyard planted by Max's father in 1989, which is now farmed by Valdez & Sons. The wine is broad with aromas of jasmine, lime zest, flinty reduction, and quince. Medium to full-bodied, it has fantastic energy, with a silky, linear feel, refreshing acidity, and a mouthwatering and balanced, mineral-toned finish. A phenomenal white with a Burgundian-aesthetic, it’s going to offer a wide drinking window over the coming 10-15 years. Drink 2025-2040.
The 2022 Chardonnay B.A. Thieriot Vineyard is powerful, wild and a bit unruly. In this tasting, I find it disjointed and lacking in balance. The Thieriot signatures are present, but they aren’t totally put together. Citrus peel, slate, chalk and mint gradually open in the glass, showing the translucence that is such a calling card of this site.
