(a 70/30 blend) Inky purple. Blackberry jam and plum preserves on the nose, with a subtle smoky element adding complexity. Creamy and a touch sweet, offering deep dark berry flavors and slow-building tannins. The smoky note repeats on the finish, which is nicely persistent and noticeably sweet. This crowd-pleaser is ready to drink.

The 2007 Koonunga Hill Shiraz (75%) – Cabernet Sauvignon (25%) was aged for eight months in seasoned oak. Purple-colored, it has an expansive perfume of blue and black fruits. On the palate it is supple-textured, ripe, and layered. This surprisingly elegant wine will evolve for several years and provide pleasure through 2017. Penfolds produces a wide range of excellent wines, red and white, low end and high end. Importer: Southcorp Wines USA; www.penfolds.com.au
