A restrained, cool and pure nose speaks of essence of red pinot fruit with top notes of spice and floral wisps. I very much like the refined mid-palate mouth feel of the delicious and vibrant medium weight flavors that exhibit fine depth and persistence on the firm and serious, indeed youthfully austere finale. This is still quite compact and is going to require at least 4 to 7 years just to become civilized and should reward a decade of more. *Outstanding*

The 2015 Pinot Noir Mills Vineyard is the one Pinot in this range planted on own-rooted vines. The bouquet alone is exotic, with tons of bright floral notes that soar from the glass. Intensely perfumed red cherry and berry flavors add to the wines exotic yet totally beguiling personality. In this range, the Mills is differentiated by its penetrating aromatics and overall freshness. (AG)

The 2014 Pinot Noir Mills Vineyard offers up a sun-kissed bouquet of cassis, pomegranate, plum preserve, spice and vanilla pod, framed by a touch of new oak. On the palate, it's full-bodied, richly tannic and firm, with some fine-grained but firm tannins asserting themselves on the finish. Harvested between September 3-18, this was cropped at a tiny yield of 0.54 tons per acre (the historic average for this site is 1.26), and its almost brutal levels of concentration and extract make it hard to read. What's clear is that several years of patience will be necessary. (WK) 93+

Calera's 2013 Pinot Noir Mills Vineyard boasts notable intensity, with a sense of linear structure that differentiates it in the lineup. The tannins need time to soften, so readers will have to be patient. Hints of sweet red cherry, hard candy, mint, herbs, wild flowers and rose petals give the Mills its signature inner sweetness as the flavors continue to brighten up as the wine sits in the glass. White pepper, blood orange and pomegranate add the closing layers of nuance. (AG) 94+
