Score 93/100 · Drink 2004-2012, Pierre Rovani, Aug 2001

The outstanding, medium to dark ruby-colored 1999 Pinot Noir Seven Springs Vineyard has intricately detailed violet, blackberry and cherry aromas. It coats the palate with loads of candied red and black fruits as well as floral flavors. It is gorgeously delineated, powerful, detailed, and exceptionally long. This magnificent wine combines elegance with muscle, and subtlety with extravagance. Projected maturity: 2004-2012. Tel. (503) 538-0666

Full deep red. Reduced aromas of cherry, mocha and meat. Large-scaled and silky, but with the restrained sweetness that characterizes this excellent set of '99s. Initially showed some edgy acidity but seemed to harmonize in the glass, showing slightly medicinal, youthful flavors of cherry, strawberry, espresso and oak. Finishes with chewy tannins. The Maresh bottling is more accessible today; this wine needs at least a couple years of patience and may ultimately merit an even higher score.
