Score 91/100 · Drink 2021-2028, Rebecca Gibb MW, Vinous, Aug 2021

From one of Laporte's top sites, the 2019 Sancerre Le Grand Rochoy is a round and weighty, yet not heavy style, produced from Sauvignon Blanc grown organically on flint soils. Its angular edges have been mellowed by fermenting half of the wine in barrels before leaving it for a year on lees where it developed savory, almond-meal-like characters. The structured finish that flint gives – like two soldiers standing guard at either side of your mouth – is still there, but it's a more gentle feeling than you often get on this terroir. Satisfying and lengthy.
