Tasting notes
Bright medium ruby. Captivating aromas of blackberry, licorice, bitter chocolate and earth, lifted by a sexy violet topnote. Dense, pliant, rich and deep, with almost peppery acidity framing and accenting the black cherry, licorice and mineral flavors. Finishes very long and seamless, with firm but suave tannins, a light touch and lovely lingering perfume. A superb vintage for this consistently excellent wine, and built to age.

The 2010 Cabernet Sauvignon Chabot Vineyard is the tightest and most reticent of these single-vineyard Cabernets from Beringer. Not surprisingly, winemaker Laurie Hook has decided to give the Chabot a few more months in oak. Today the Chabot is incredibly shut down, with the intensity of these obsidian-rich soils playing a dominant role. From time to time, hints of the wine's pedigree emerge, but only with great reluctance.

The top Cabernet Sauvignon bottlings are terrific, but I am just as drawn to the entry and mid-tier offerings for their superb value and wide availability in the market. Tel. (707) 963-7115
