Red-ruby. Less open on the nose than the Cote de Nuits-Villages, and less sweet in the mouth today, but this is also creamy and dense, with huge extract. Shows the roasted character of the vintage on the finish, which displays substantial tannins and hints of molasses and raisin.

Medium to dark ruby-colored and dark wild berry-scented, the 2003 Nuits-St.-Georges Les Hauts Poirets is an austere, foursquare wine. While it reveals impressive depth to its blackberry and brambleberry-flavored core, this effort also displays a firm, hard tannic structure that is worrisome. Projected maturity: 2009-2015? Red-ruby. Sappy aromas of black cherry, licorice and menthol; superripe but with pinot snap. Sweet and densely packed, with strong torrefaction notes of licorice and dark chocolate. Here the oak-driven tannins are more solid and serious.
