One of my personal favorite offerings from Guigal is their Lieu-Dit Saint-Joseph, for its balance of high quality and reasonable cost. The 2019 Saint-Joseph Lieu-Dit Saint-Joseph comes across as slightly oaky, with overtones of hickory smoke and cedar, but underlying those are strong currents of black cherries and blueberries, plus hints of crushed stone. It's medium to full-bodied, smooth and polished in feel, slick, silky and lingering on the finish.

The 2019 Saint Joseph Lieu-Dit Saint Joseph ratchets everything up a notch and has an almost flamboyant style in its sunny red and black fruits, spice, smoked game and flowery incense aromas and flavors. It's full-bodied, has sweet tannins, a round, sexy profile, and a great finish. The oak here is also perfectly integrated. Drink this beauty any time over the coming 10-15 years.

Saturated violet color. Smoke- and mineral-accented black and blue fruit, licorice and potpourri aromas show fine definition and spicy lift. Appealingly sweet and energetic on the palate, offering sweet blackberry, cassis, olive and exotic spice flavors underscored by juicy acidity. Shows very good depth as well as finesse and finishes extremely long and supple, with well-judged tannins that build steadily and add shape to the wine's lingering dark fruit.

Distinctly smoky and flinty nose, with white flowers also. Lots of creamy fruit with the flinty note appearing again on the finish – savoury style but also has peachy nutty bite. Delicious. (AC)
