Tasting notes
Verduno. Lustrous mid ruby with orange tinges. Very fine and perfumed but at the same time subdued. Great purity of fruit, if still very backward and tight. And with spice and stalky hints. Long, firm, chewy tannins and curled up, yet concentrated raspberry fruit. This deserves much more bottle age that will definitely pay off. (WS)

Fratelli Alessandria started bottling Monvigliero back in 1978. The 2021 Barolo Monvigliero (with 7,000 bottles released) is a wine of extreme elegance and grace. It shows wild berry, redcurrant, lilac and light spice. Fruit comes from a 1.4-hectare plot with south and southwest exposures on silty limestone soils. There is a pretty note of floral sweetness over polished tannins that makes for a lasting impression.
The bright ruby 2021 Barolo Monvigliero is a sporty wine, focused and lifted on the nose with notes of cranberries, cinnamon, rhubarb, and orange zest, and as it opens, it softens a little to pretty strawberry fruit and floral aromas. The palate is equally focused and energetic, with compact tension, fine tannins, ripe, energetic acidity, and a detailed saline finish. It’s long on the palate, racy, and refined, and I expect it to benefit from time in bottle as it fleshes out a bit. Drink 2026-2050.
Pale red. Intensely heady. Quite concentrated – distinctive! If it's density you’re after, go for this! Quite long. (JR)
