Pinot Noir planted late 1990s on sand and clay at 250 ft elevation on a gentle south-facing slope. 15% whole cluster, 18 months in barrel, racked once, bottled unfiltered. Chanin's youngest vineyard and his lightest Pinot. Very fresh and perfumed. Rather fungal and savoury, Dry finish. Very slightly dusty, not as much obvious fruit on the palate as Chanin’s other Pinots. (JR)

As with the Chardonnay bottling, the 2022 Pinot Noir Zotovich Vineyard falls in the stylistic center of the Chanin Pinot Noir roster. It leads with elegant and reserved aromas of dried flowers, dark spices and oolong tea leaves. The palate offers the most velvety concentration of the Chanin Pinot Noirs, leading to a rich yet energetic finish framed with subtly drying tannins and increasing tension with time in the glass.

Mulled cherries, dried herbs, leather, and savory flower notes all emerge from the 2022 Pinot Noir Zotovich Vineyard, a classic Sta. Rita Hills effort that has some gamey, exotic nuances as well as medium-bodied richness, ripe yet still present tannins, and a good finish.

The 2022 Pinot Noir Zotovich Vineyard is another pretty, beguiling wine in this range. Rosewater, dried flowers, mint, cedar and orange peel are all nicely lifted. Sandy soils and the decision to pick early yielded an especially aromatic wine that sits on the edge of underripeness, but in a good way. There's a lot of stuffing here—certainly more than enough to provide pleasure for a number of years.
