Bright red-ruby. Black cherry, licorice and a musky stony nuance on the nose. At once silky and juicy on the palate, with black raspberry and blackberry fruit flavors complicated by a saline quality. This densely packed wine shows little in the way of early sweetness and seemed to go into a shell in the glass, with its firm minerality gaining the upper hand. This will require patience.

Dense with good fresh fruit, so long as you search for it. Still pretty austere. No more than medium-bodied. (JR)

(from purchased grapes; 27% new oak; the Ligniers do everything here but the spring pruning): Violet-tinged red. Sexy, wild scents of black and purple fruits, animal fur and game. Juicy and densely packed, showing a distinctly cool quality and good medicinal reserve. More backward than the Morey 1er Cru Vieilles Vignes, finishing saline and firm, with mineral-driven tannins. Still a suggestion of malic acidity, as the secondary fermentation had just finished. Made from two parcels of vines, one 35 to 40 years old and the other more than 60.

The 2013 Gevrey Chambertin 1er Cru la Perrière, a vineyard that Hubert and Laurent have treated organically for three years, has a quite an intense bouquet with small red cherries, cranberry and raspberry preserve. The palate is very well balanced with just the right amount of acidity to cut through the succulent red fruit, although the finish does not quite possess the delineation that I was expecting at the moment.
