Given this vineyard's terroir, the 1996 La Fleur de Gay is a light, disappointing effort. Its nose of new oak, dried herbs, and red fruits is followed by an elegant, compressed wine that is correctly made, but uninspiring. There is dry, astringent tannin in the finish. I do not believe this wine will soften and fatten up, so consume it over the next 7-8 years.

The 1996 La Fleur de Gay, picked from October 8th, has a pure ripe nose of raspberry, cranberry, mint and crushed stone aromas with impressive delineation. This is still very tight at the moment, but it begins to unfurl with continued aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy, dry tannins. The 1996 has good weight in the mouth, but compared to the 1995, it is very linear and comparatively one-dimensional. Tasted June 2011. Tasting note taken from the Pomerol book by Neal Martin.
