Score 87/100 · Drink 2024-2028, Yohan Castaing, Wine Advocate, Aug 2024

The 2021 Vin de France Bastingage, crafted from Chenin planted on schist and quartz soils, evokes aromas of flint, oak, ripe orchard fruits and herbs mingled with an oaky frame. Medium to full-bodied, rich and ample, it has a fleshy core of fruit that segues into a bitter, dry and somewhat rustic finish. Matured for one year in 500-liter foudres, followed by 5 months in stainless tanks, this is a rather demonstrative, oaky white wine from Anjou.

The 2021 Bastingage is a barrel-fermented Chenin Blanc hailing from four different parcels. While round, it is focused, firm and compact. It achieves a silky, creamy character followed up with tension and line. Nectarine allies with subtle vanilla and spice derived from oak. Just shy of medium in body, there's chili spice and a hint of alcohol warmth (14%).
