100% new oak. 20% whole bunch for the first time because they wanted to give a little more length. He was not too happy with one of the light-toasted barrels, chosen to respect the terroir but would have been better with 36 months’ seasoning. Mid crimson. Another seductive wine, replete with ripe and pure deep-red fruit. There’s definitely a firming up here from the oak, drawing everything in from that open fruit aroma. The structure is clamping down on the fruit at the moment but there’s a lovely wine in here, just needs time. (JH)

The 2014 Echézeaux Grand Cru, matured entirely in new wood, has a composed bouquet with red berry fruit intermingling with vanilla and a touch of mocha. The new oak is integrated here but just depriving it of some tension. The palate is fleshy and ripe on the entry, the acidity is well judged and there are mouth-coating tannins here - one of the more "grippy" Echézeaux that I encountered during the vintage. The new oak comes across towards the finish, curving the edges, rending it smooth but just missing some of the detail it might have had.
About the producer
Descended from the Gros family of Vosne-Romanée, Anne-Françoise Gros established her own domaine in 1988. Today her children, Caroline and Mathias Parent, run the estate, which has some impressive holdings, focused in and around Vosne-Romanée.
