The 2014 Kiedrich Gräfenberg Riesling Trocken GG starts very intense and aromatic on the nose yet is not as refined as the 2015 and shows herbal notes and rather upfront fruit. Full-bodied, tightly structured and slightly drying on the finish, this is an elegant and persistently saline Gräfenberg that reveals a slightly astringent finish. Natural cork. Tasted at the domaine in Kiedrich, August 2025.

Flower shop aromas share billing with intimations of the lemon and Bartlett pear that then dominates this bottling’s polished, glossy if beneath that firm palate. The gripping finish invigorates with nips of cress and pepper as well as zesty lemon and crystalline, chalky, iodine-like mineral impingements. This needs some time and will hopefully become more winsome.
There is certainly something different about the nose of the Gräfenberg. The aromas that stand out in the 2014 vintage are a pure and almost spirity concentration of fruit and a distinctively fumy mineral fragrance. The palate shows the classic Rheingau peach fruit in all its glory; crunchy, juicy and aromatic. To deliver acidity as perfect as this, the grapes would have been picked à point, and all of it is needed to balance the full body and creamy-waxy texture. Maybe the perception of a sweet note of fine cocoa was a figment of my imagination, but not the dusty stony mineral touch on the very long finish. (MS)
