Score 89/100 · Drink 2024-2035, Stephan Reinhardt, Wine Advocate, Aug 2021

The 2015 Chinon Les Varennes du Grand Clos is from a northeast-facing vineyard in Sazilly, which is located on clayey-limestone soils on the top and sandy soils at the bottom. Aged for 14 months in 228-liter barrels (of which a small percentage were new) and another six months in tanks before the bottling, the 2015 opens with perfectly ripe dark fruit and floral aromas on the nose. It is a full-bodied, smooth, round, fresh and elegant Cabernet Franc with large, intense and juicy fruit, fine (and oaky) tannins and spicy flavors. The finish is aromatic, fresh and slightly salty, showing a good vibration and vitality as well as a tight but elegant structure. Bottled in September 2017.
