Tasting notes
Aromas of dark fruits, licorice, cherry preserves, sweet soil tones, petals and spices introduce Glantenay's 2020 Volnay 1er Cru Clos des Chênes, a full-bodied, rich and concentrated wine that's the fleshiest and ripest of any cuvée in the cellar this year. For power and texture, it stands out, even if it can't quite match the finesse and incipient complexity of the Regions and Caillerets.

The 2020 Volnay Clos des Chênes 1er Cru has a backward, quite Pommard-like bouquet initially, opening with more red fruit to accompany the black, hints of Kalamata olive and sous-bois. I admire the precision of this Volnay. The palate is medium-bodied with grippy tannins, quite spicy with firm grip, plenty of substance towards the finish that has tremendous length. This will joust with the Les Rugiens as Glantenay’s best 2020.
