The 2016 Brunello di Montalcino Chiuso del Lupo is dark and understated in the glass, as nuances of leather and cedar give way to hints of black cherry. Within, I’m finding a silky, pliant expression, with a core of savory red berries and spices lifted by bright acidity. It tapers off structured and a bit chewy, yet potent and long. The Chiuso del Lupo would benefit from another two to three years of cellaring to show its best.

From a south- and south-west-facing vineyard at 550 m above sea level. Spontaneous fermentation and racked off after two weeks into 30- and 54-hl French oak barrels where it ages for 38 months followed by six in bottle. Just mid ruby. Sweet and monolithic on the nose. Riper and a little denser on the palate than the straight Brunello, but in spite of the plentiful tangy fruit this shows less anima , less tension and less complexity and seems to be developing faster.
