Tasted blind at the Burgfest tasting in Beaune, the 2013 Mazis-Chambertin Grand Cru has quite a dense bouquet that does not possess the "transparency" of Pierre Duroché's Latricières with which there were stylistic comparisons. However, it does improve in the glass and offers attractive, soy-tinged red berry fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannin, not the most complex Grand Cru, though it feels lithe and harmonious in the mouth. There is a dash of white pepper that lingers on the aftertaste, completing a fine wine that will repay cellaring. Tasted September 2016.

Medium red, a bit less saturated than the Mazoyères. Ripe aromas of musky strawberry, licorice and game are complicated by exotic oak tones. Sweet, plush and wild; a no-holds-barred Mazis-Chambertin with a captivating combination of red and darker fruits and savory soil tones. Finishes classically dry and long, with suave tannins. Not many other vineyards can provide this distinctive blend of wildness and refined texture.

(70% new oak): Deep red. Dark fruits and an element of leesy reduction on the nose. Then sweet, fat and ripe on the palate, offering terrific depth and richness to its dark berry, licorice and violet flavors. Presents a felicitous combination of fullness and energy, with the fruit carrying impressively on the very long, ripely tannic aftertaste.
