Darkly floral and a bit herbal in the glass, the 2011 Oratorio di San Lorenzo Riserva opens with a mix of crushed raspberry, cedar and brown spice offset by hints of rosemary and crushed ashen stones. It's softly textured yet quickly gains in tension as tart red fruits stain the palate, and nervous acidity adds a wiry feel. This finishes potent and staining with a licorice and black raspberry concentration, as grippy tannins still resonate throughout. The Oratorio di San Lorenzo Riserva is a varietal Carménère refined in 100% new oak barriques.

'The Colli Berici is now considered one of the best areas for this grape variety in the world', we are assured by Inama on their website. This is a selection of their best Carmenère. Very dark purplish crimson. Peppery and greenish on the nose – very Carmenère! I wonder why it is quite so alcoholic – did they have to wait for the grape phenolics to ripen properly? Definitely ready now. Well done Inama waiting for the wine to be ready. Just a hint of heat on the end. (JR)

The 2011 Colli Berici Carmenere Riserva Oratorio di San Lorenzo is a deep and penetrating wine with a thick, black appearance. This wine oozes with power and concentration. The bouquet shows savory tones of dark fruit, dried prune, plum, tobacco, barbecue smoke and exotic spice. It's the quintessential winter wine to pair with braised beef or game meat. Its tannins are soft and chewy and the wine is ever-so velvety in texture. If you like feminine wines, this is not for you. But if you love mass and class in one big package, this is a safe bet.
