Score 94/100 · Drink 2021-2030, Erin Brooks, Wine Advocate, Jun 2021

The 2018 Estate Cuvée is made up of 63% Zinfandel, 27% Syrah and 10% Petite Sirah. It has a nose of red and black cherries, pencil shavings, pipe tobacco and lovely tinges of violet and dried lavender. It's full-bodied and powerful, with intense, mineral-laced fruits and a strong spine of acidity that will help this wine age well in bottle.

The 2018 Estate Cuvée (formerly 1023) is conceived as a selection from the best lots of the year. A full-bodied, potent wine, the Estate Cuvée packs a ton of intensity. Syrah and Petite Sirah play important roles in this blend, and it shows in the wine’s overall power and dark flavor profile. Black cherry, gravel, spice and leather resonate through the deep finish.

There are 15 barrels of the 2018 Estate Cuvee, which is a blend of 63% Zinfandel, 27% Syrah, and the balance Petite Sirah. More closed aromatically and dark, dense, and meaty (no doubt due to the Syrah and Petite Sirah), it slowly gives up loads of black and blue fruits, ground pepper, brambly herbs, and cedar. Rich, full-bodied, and concentrated on the palate, it offers a more mouthfilling, powerful style compared to the other Zinfandels in the lineup, yet stays classic, balanced, and structured. Give it a year or three.

Tank sample ready to bottle. Jake thinks this is one of the great estates of the world. Historically the flagship wine was Zin/Syrah. This is 60% Zin plus other varieties. It’s meant to reflect vintage and site. Glossy and polished nose. Sweet start and real freshness and masses of tannin. Well-integrated elements, though it’s nowhere near ready yet. (JR)
