Deep ruby. Explosive blackberry and candied raspberry aromas are complicated by rose, violet and lavender. Juicy and fresh, with vibrant dark berry flavors, silky texture and a big jolt of baking spices on the back end. Impressively fresh, pure and sappy zinfandel with outstanding finishing lift and thrust.

The 2006 Zinfandel Pietro’s Ranch (from a vineyard planted in 1905, and in this blend, 85% Zinfandel and 15% mixed blacks) is perhaps my favorite wine of all the Zinfandels. Absolutely seamless, an example of Zinfandel haute couture, this stunningly proportioned wine exhibits a deep ruby purple color, a sweet nose of black raspberries, hints of Provencal herbs (or is it garrigue?) with some chocolate and other briery fruits. Full-bodied, rich, and long, this is a tour de force in Zinfandel that should drink beautifully for at least a decade. There were only 195 cases produced.
