Monforte d'Alba. Deep, concentrated ruby. Very pretty optic. Ripe and open knit, peppery dried-fruit nose with hint of cinnamon bark. Sweet, rich attack. Not the most complex of wines, but ripe and balanced with lovely acidic twist on the finish. (WS)

The 2006 Barolo is a round, harmonious offering laced with ripe red fruits, spices and flowers, all of which come together quite nicely on a mid-weight frame. The wine continues to improve in the glass, gaining further depth and balance. Once again, this is a terrific effort from Gianfranco Alessandria.

Gianfranco Alessandria has emerged as one of Piedmont’s most consistent small growers. His Barolos rarely disappoint, and these fine 2006s are no exception. Both Barolos are made from Alessandria’s vineyards in Monforte. The Barolo is aged in neutral oak, while the San Giovanni sees a percentage of new barrels. Importer: T. Good full red. Red fruits, spices and a whiff of apple on the nose. Supple but one-dimensional, with a pronounced oakiness currently overshadowing the wine's fruit and giving a dry edge to the tannins.
