The 2015 Brunello di Montalcino Pietranera is very evolved and mature. In fact, the wine feels well past its prime. My samples opened to a dark garnet color with sepia rims and aromas of dried fruit, plum, resin, tar and charred meat. There are earthy and leathery tones as well, but what the wine really lacks is fresh fruit. Some 60,000 bottles were produced. Fruit comes from a dry and warm growing site on the southeastern side of the appellation not too far from the beautiful Castello della Velona.

The 2015 Brunello di Montalcino is dark and earthy, displaying a dusty blend of black cherry, damp soil, leather, and floral tones. On the palate, silky textures flow effortlessly across the senses, hosting sweet cherry and herbs; yet I’m craving more depth, as the Pietranera finishes with medium length, pretty inner florals, and a hint of savory spice, but little in the way of structure to carry it in the cellar.

Tasted blind. Mid to deep ruby with bright orange tinges. Firm nose that doesn’t reveal all at this stage. Compact fruit with gripping but ripe tannins. Long, balanced and plentiful without enormous complexity, but with good depth of fruit. (WS)

Extremely perfumed and pretty with plum and black-cherry aromas, as well has just hints of cedar. Full body, chewy tannins and lots of fruit. Yet, it’s always reserved and beautiful. Needs three or four years to come together. Drink after 2022.
