Tasting notes
133-year-old vines. Fruit fermented in small open-top redwood fermenters. Aged in 100% French oak – 30% new. pH 3.75. 150 cases made. Tasted blind. Deep ruby in colour. Dried blackberry and orange peel. Quite high tannin and elevated acidity. This is much, much too young. The fruit that draws out the finish suggests that, given a few years, it will be spectacular. The 2021 Zinfandel Bedrock Vineyard is a powerful, deep wine. The 2021 is not a huge wine, that actually works to its advantage. I like the freshness here as well as a style that seems to rely more on nuance than the bombastic intensity of some previous years. Sweet rose petal, cedar, tobacco, mint and kirsch all take shape in a wine that screams with varietal Zinfandel character. Even with all its obvious intensity, the 2021 retains terrific freshness.
