Tasting notes
A more pretty, elegant and seamless effort than the Lester Vineyard, the 2013 Pinot Noir Alfaro Family Vineyard is a rock star Pinot Noir that does everything right. Offering up classic red and black raspberry fruits, crushed flowers, peppery spice and wet rock like minerality, it's perfectly balanced on the palate, with a lively, ethereal texture, vibrant, yet integrated acidity and a great finish. This is pure class, and while it saw a similar level of whole cluster inclusion to the Lester Vineyard Pinot Noir, it's much more integrated here.

The 2013 Pinot Noir Alfaro Family Vineyard has come together beautifully since I tasted it last year. Dark red cherry, plum, spice and leather are all nicely delineated in the glass. Pliant and expressive, the 2013 speaks to finesse. The Alfaro was done with about 30% whole clusters, low by Big Basin's standards, but an approach that worked beautifully here.
Big Basin's 2013 Pinot Noir Alfaro Family Vineyard is intensely aromatic, lifted and savory. Brisk, saline notes add energy, but the mid-palate is not yet fully developed. It will be interesting to see what further time in barrel brings.
