Score 85/100 · Drink 1998-2003, Robert Parker, Dec 1998

The 1995 Chardonnay Fournier Vineyard is extremely tight, with high acidity, and a structured, backward feel. There is good underlying minerality and vague notions of honeyed, ripe fruit in this solidly made Chardonnay. The question is, will it develop? Hopefully this 1995 will open with bottle age. This wine should age for 4-5 years. The winemaking philosophy employed by Gus and Todd Anderson includes extensive lees stirring, no malolactic fermentation, and bottling after 18 months with no filtration. (This is a tricky proposition when the wine has not gone through malolactic.) Fermentations are done by indigenous yeasts, and the wine is aged in a combination of barrels from Francois Freres and Demptos. Tel. (707) 963-8600; Fax (707) 963-7818

The debut 1995 Chardonnay produced by Todd and Gus Anderson is a powerful, viscous, super-rich wine that should make additional friends for this high quality producer in Napa's scenic Conn Valley. The wine was not put through malolactic, but it was given extensive sur-lees aging, as well as fermented in barrel. It possesses marvelous intensity and richness, but it must still survive a sterile filtration (this is obligatory when malolactic fermentation is blocked), so it remains to be known how much intensity is lost. However, this wine could lose ten percent of its flavor and still turn out to be exceptional. Keep your eyes out for this Chardonnay when it is released in early 1997. Tel.
