Score 92/100 · Drink 2025-2028, Jeb Dunnuck, Mar 2025

The 2009 Monteverro is another brooding and potent expression of the cuvée, leading with deep Mediterranean herbs, worn leather, dark chocolate, and baked plums. The palate is ripe but nicely finessed, with velvety tannins and supple ripe fruit, without feeling weighted. While it’s past its peak, it should drink well for the next few years. Bottle 11621/14718.

Vineyards just four kilometres from the sea, in front of Monte Argentario. Very dry summers. 45% Cabernet Sauvignon, 35% Cabernet Franc, 10% Merlot, 10% Petit Verdot on red clay and limestone soils. Each vineyard is vinified separately. No pumps in the cellar, Fermentation in stainless steel and barriques with natural yeast. In French barriques for 14 months. Tasted in magnum. Only their second vintage! Very dark crimson. Pretty sweet and ‘modern’. Pretty Rollandian in terms of ripeness. Very sweet and quite powerful. Certainly doesn’t follow the Solaia model of including Sangiovese and obvious Tuscan-ness. Not quite refreshing enough for me. Should go down very well with stereotypical US palates. Certainly very successfully made to a certain formula. (JR)

Rich and sweet but a bit more refreshing than the 2008. Tastes as though it were picked when the grapes were not as overripe. Some structure and future. but certainly not the most Tuscan of Tuscan wines.... (JR)
