Score 92/100 · Drink 2030, Jeb Dunnuck, Feb 2020

The 2001 Rivesaltes Ambré comes mostly from Macabeu yet includes 5-10% Grenache and spent 13 years in foudre before bottling. It offers terrific as well as textbook notes of toffee, sweet caramel, coffee beans, cigar, and dried figs. It’s nicely balanced on the palate, with a fresher, more medium-bodied style, as well as good acidity and a clean finish, it’s drinking perfectly today yet should continue evolving gracefully going forward. It doesn’t have the depth or richness of the older vintages but is beautifully balance and oh so drinkable.

The 2001 Rivesaltes Ambré is a classic effort that offers terrific notes of toffee, sweet caramel and dried fruits. Made with mostly Macabeu, yet with 5-10% Grenache, aged 13 years in old foudre, it’s gorgeously balanced, seamless and elegant, with perfect integration of its alcohol and sweetness. I’m sure it will continue to evolve nicely, but I see no reason to hold off either.
