Like many white Burgundies of this vintage, the 1996 Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru En Virondot hasn't aged particularly well. While it isn't actually oxidized, its golden hue, evolved aromatics and lack of texture or structure on the palate meant that it ended up in a sauce rather than our glasses.

Honey, truffle, earth, resin, game and a hint of caramel on the nose; seems a bit tired and lacking in Chassagne character. Drier in the mouth, with the mineral and lemon character often shown by this bottling, yet lacks freshness. Flavor of damp earth on the finish. A second bottle, tasted in New York, showed a somewhat rustic, saline nose with hints of melon and crabapple; very good fat and density; and firm, well integrated acids. This second sample merited its rating.
