Opaque ruby. Lush cherry, cassis and floral pastille scents plus a hint of incense on the deeply perfumed nose. Supple and broad in the mouth; spice and mineral elements add lift to sweet black and blue fruit flavors. Finishes sweet, velvety and impressively long, displaying excellent clarity and smooth, rounded tannins that come in late.

Composed of 38% Mourvèdre, 33% Grenache and 29% Syrah (all estate), the 2014 Azimuth presents a medium to deep garnet-purple color and broody, earthy nose of warm black berries and black plums plus suggestions of mossy bark, loam and underbrush. The full-bodied palate reveals perfumed layers and plenty of savory interest to add to the understated fruit, featuring firm, ripe, rounded tannins and a lively backbone, finishing with great length and depth. This is a great one for those that love more restrained, savory styles. Just give it another year or two in bottle and drink it over the next 15+.

The 2014 Azimuth checks in as a blend of 38% Mourvèdre, 33% Grenache, and 29% Syrah that spent 18 months in French oak. Black cherries, currants, smoked herbs and licorice give way to a rich, nicely balanced, textured red whose only downside is that the finish drops off a touch faster that I'd expect. Still, it's a beautifully layered and complex wine to drink over the coming 7-8 years. I continue to love the wines from Carl Bowker’s Caliza Winery. Located just beside Booker Vineyard, Carl makes a big, rich, yet balanced style of red, as well as smokin’ good white.
