Commune of Novello. Concentrated ruby with broad orange-tinged rim. Round fruit on the attack, but pulled back by the acidity and the stalky tannin. Could be a little more fruit driven. (WS)

The 2009 Barolo Sotto Castello di Novello is striking. Firm yet nicely integrated tannins support a core of vibrant dark fruit. Layers of dark, balsamic infused fruit flesh out in all directions in this beautifully delineated Barolo. Hints of menthol and spice develop later, adding further dimensions of complexity. All the elements are in the right place, but readers will need to give the 2009 a few years for the tannins to start melting away. I have to say, there is a lot to like in the Castello di Novello, especially the way the wine keeps changing in the glass. At times subtle yet powerful, the 2009 embodies many of the sensual, elusive qualities that make Nebbiolo such a fascinating grape.
