Score 89/100 · Drink 2014-2019, Jeb Dunnuck, Wine Advocate, Oct 2014

Showing a little rough around the edge, with a mid-weight, straightforward feel, the 2012 Pinot Noir Garys’ Vineyard has juicy black cherry, licorice, pepper, pine resin and underbrush aromas and flavors. There’s a touch of volatility here, and while it will be better with another 6-12 months in bottle, it lags the other efforts from the Santa Lucia Highlands.

The 2012 Pinot Noir Garys' Vineyard comes across as a bit rough around the edges following its bottling in February 2014. Black cherries, tobacco, earthiness and grilled herbs flesh out in the glass. The 2012 shows lovely depth in its blue/blackish fruit, but some angular contours remain. It will be interesting to see if things come together a bit more fully in bottle. I should add that many of the Pinots I tasted from the Pisoni Vineyard in this vintage are underachievers relative to the past. I have to believe there is at least one common thread that unites all of those wines.

Bright ruby. Black raspberry, spicy oak and a sexy floral nuance on the highly perfumed nose. Smooth and seamless in texture, offering sweet red berry liqueur and cherry-cola flavors and notes of candied flowers and vanilla. Finishes silky and very long, with slow-building tannins and lingering florality.

One of the most promising wines in this set of 2012's, Siduri's Pinot Noir Garys' Vineyard brings together a rich, layered expression of fruit along with a gorgeous sense of understatement and polish. Dark red cherries lead to plum, mint and clove notes as the 2012 shows off its considerable mid-palate pliancy and fleshy, generous finish. There is a lot to look forward to here.
