Score 92/100 · Drink 2020-2032, Anthony Mueller, Wine Advocate, Oct 2020

The 2014 Aglianico Serra Pedace Vineyard bursts out of the glass with a tight, dark-fruited nose with subtle spice tones and leather hints. Full-bodied, the wine has firm tannins across the palate but shows elegant components of dusty black cherries. The wine continues to evolve on the long, lingering finish, showing its complexities through a rustic lens of the old world and the vibrancy of the new world with a gleaming fruit shine. The wine rested for 44 months in a mix of terracotta amphorae, first and second fill French oak barrels and neutral oval botti. It will drink well for more than a decade, but I see this performing better after 2024. Just over 4,100 bottles were made.

Coming from a single vineyard in Walla Walla and aged 44 months in terracotta amphorae, new and once-filled French oak barrels, and neutral oval botti, the 2014 Aglianico Serra Pedace Vineyard sports a dense purple color as well as impressive notes of bright blue and black fruits, crushed violets, scorched earth, and graphite. These carry to a medium to full-bodied, impeccably balanced, structured wine that has remarkable purity of fruit. Despite the long élevage, it's still a pup. Give it 2-3 years if you can, and it's going to hold for 15 years or more. There are 343 cases produced. Located in Walla Walla and made by Chris Figgins, Leonetti Cellars is one of the benchmark estates in Washington. They produce a bevy of Bordeaux blends, with their Cabernet Sauvignon and Reserve functioning as the flagship wines. They also make a tiny amount of their single vineyard releases, all of which showed brilliantly for this report. Unquestionably, these 2017s are up with the crème de la crème of the vintage. While the 2017 vintage is generally forward and approachable, that’s not the case here and these wines are going to benefit from bottle age.
