The 2014 Kastanienbusch Riesling GG displays clear, elegant, rather cool and beautifully ripened fruit. On the palate, the wine is supple, very elegant and carried by delicate, playful acidity. The 2014 vintage is juicy and endowed with fine tannins and lemon bitterness. It is a classic vintage and style with good length. Tasted at the Rebholz Kastanienbusch/Christmann Idig/Wittmann Morstein vertical tasting in Westhofen in August 2024.

The nose is pungently assaulted by orange and lemon rinds, bruised apple, lavender and peat-like smokiness. Firmer in feel than its two immediate Grosses Gewächs siblings, this takes a stony, rather austere turn in its undeniably gripping and formidably piquant finish. The sense of palpable extract richness with buoyancy borne of modest alcohol is especially striking here. This definitely needs time.
On the nose the Kastanienbusch relies not only on the heady fragrance of ripe fruit from local orchards, but adds intricate notes of herbs, hay and flint for good measure. Apricot, peach and even a touch of sweet grapefruit tempt the palate with a fine juicy quality, but the coup-de-grace is delivered by a superb composition of herbal and mineral notes culminating in a delicate and almost medicinal nuance of quinine.
