Score 86/100 · Drink 2023-2025, Antonio Galloni, Vinous, Aug 2023

The 2020 Chardonnay (Sonoma Coast) offers good energy and delineation. Citrus peel, minerals and floral accents lend brightness. Ultimately, though, the 2020 offers only modest depth and overall complexity.

With a portion of the fruit sourced from the Charles Heintz Vineyard, the 2020 Chardonnay Sonoma Coast is aromatic of fresh salted pineapple, chive, and delicate flinty reduction. The palate is ripe up front, with juicy citrus of Meyer lemon, green apple, and a stony mineral texture. This is a beautiful appellation wine to drink over the next 10 years or more. Founded by three childhood friends, Christopher Strieter, Max Thieriot, and Myles Lawrence-Briggs, Senses Wines has their estate holdings in the West Sonoma Coast and Russian River Valley appellations. With their esteemed winemaker, Thomas Rivers Brown, they are producing some exceptional Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and a small amount of Cabernet Sauvignon. They have slowly and steadily expanded their production from just 600 cases in 2012 to approximately 5000 cases today.

Delicate to begin, the 2020 Chardonnay Tenth Stop takes time to unfold aromas of beeswax, toasted meringue, sage, lime and crushed stone. The light-bodied palate is seamless and mineral-driven at this stage, with a satiny texture, intense flavors and great length. (EB)

The 2020 Chardonnay Sonoma Coast is scented of bruised apples, mushrooms and flint. The light-bodied palate offers more definition, with a core of herbal, lemony fruit and a long, waxy finish. 195 cases were made.
