Tasting notes
The 2018 Zinfandel Old Vine is bright, floral and beautifully perfumed. Crushed red berries, flowers and sweet spice give the 2018 a very pretty sense of lift. In 2018, the Old Vine is especially gracious and light on its feet. The blend incorporates fruit from a number of top sites, including Bedrock, Teldeschi, Esola, Pagani, Papera, Evangelho and Pato.

90% Zinfandel, 10% mixed black varieties, average vine age 80 years. Nice price! According to Morgan this is the most important wine he makes, constituting half of production (they make about 25 wines). ‘We try to flex to the strengths of the valley.’ 8% new French oak. They farm about 60% of the fruit themselves. ‘Contra Costa is the antidote to Amador County’ (Bedrock make one Amador wine, from the same vineyard Ridge once bought from for their Shenandoah bottling). Savoury nose and really appetising. Lively and so unlike most people’s idea of Zin. Not a berry or jamminess in sight! Quite a bit of chew. Dry finish. No heat. VGV (JR)
