The Roty 1999 Mazis-Chambertin Grand Cru was a comparative disappointment given the domaine, the vineyard and the year, as its bouquet of plum, prune, grilled meat, soy and hoisin was a touch evolved and muddled for a wine that should still be in the flush of youth. On the palate, the wine was rich and full-bodied, with good acid, but quite a dry, roasted profile that did seem to resuscitate a bit as it sat in the glass. I’m hoping that this bottle wasn’t representative.

Bright medium ruby. Black cherry, licorice and charred meat on the very ripe nose. Then quite tightly wrapped and dominated by its structure, but the underlying richness and depth are already apparent. The wine's creamy concentration suggests very small grapes-and old vines. Very youthful wine, finishing with strong but ripe tannins.
