Score 92/100 · Drink 2025-2040, Stephan Reinhardt, Wine Advocate, Jun 2022

The ruby colored 2018 Spätburgunder Simonroth opens with an intense and ripe cassis bouquet with lots of charm and licorice sweetness, reflecting the generous and sunny year. Fine and flinty terroir aromas emerge after a while and open up the wine for more dimensions as well as spices and notes of graphite and black tea. Fermented with 100% whole clusters, this is a fine and elegant but generous Pinot with remarkable finesse and juiciness. The finish is spicy if not almost peppery and fresh yet still also quite astringent. The wine has firm and crunchy tannins and reveals a dry finish yet with intense, ripe and promising fruit. A wine that needs another few years to come back. 13% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted in March 2022.
