Tasting notes
The 2015 Ampio delle Mortelle has been fabulous on both occasions I have tasted it so far. Carménère takes the leading role. Bright red fruit, flowers, blood orange, pomegranate, mint and new leather are all amped up in a wine of notable power and textural intensity. The new French oak is perhaps at the limit, but the wine is so delicious and inviting, it almost does not matter. Antinori is on to something magical here. The 2015 Ampio is a real beauty. I can only imagine that future vintages will be even more compelling.

The 2015 Ampio delle Mortelle is a blend of Carmenère with Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc in supporting roles. This wine shows an inky dark, impenetrable appearance with ripe and succulent notes of blackberry confit and dark plum. This is a full-bodied red wine that is glued together by thick flavor concentration and sweet, ripe tannins. Only 3,200 bottles were made.
