One cuvée that will demand patience is the 2019 Volnay 1er Cru Les Champans, a serious, elegantly muscular wine that displays considerable potential. Offering up aromas of cassis, wild berries, vanilla pod, sweet spices and loamy soil, it's medium to full-bodied, layered and concentrated, with real depth and mid-palate amplitude, built around rich tannins and lively acids.

Cusp of garnet and crimson. Pale rim. More muted nose than the village Volnay. Very firm, savoury and clearly long term. Grainy tannins on the end. Needs time. Admirably fresh. (JR)

The 2019 Volnay Champans 1er Cru comes from a young parcel planted 33 years ago. It has a very well defined bouquet with predominantly red berry fruit, laced with briary and crushed stone, later a touch of rose petal. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins, the same structure as the Santenots, perhaps with a little more spiciness and edge. Again, superb length and precision here. Excellent.
