The 2013 Irancy Les Mazelots comes from vines replanted just after phylloxera, almost one century old, 100% Pinot Noir on Kimmerdgian limestone. Guilhem Goisot told me that Les Mazelots' soils are rich in chalk, whereas other vineyards are rich in clay and it gives more flower and spice aromas. It has a heavenly, floral, wilted-violet bouquet that is very defined. There is a marine influence here, a touch of seaweed and iodine just in the background. The palate is well balanced with firm tannins that exert a gentle grip. There is an engaging piquancy here, lively and tensile but with plenty of dark berry fruit interlaced with minerals on the finish. This is superb.
