Score 84/100 · Drink 2019-2024, Matthew Luczy, Wine Advocate, Sep 2024

A blend of 73% Cabernet Sauvignon, 21% Syrah and 6% Petit Verdot, the 2017 The Big Game opens with a nose of preserved strawberries and muddled berries. The palate is texturally consistent with essentially every wine from this producer, with a glossy, slick texture that quickly transitions to a dilute finish.

Inky violet. A complex, deeply perfumed bouquet evokes ripe dark berries, pipe tobacco, incense and vanilla, along with a suave floral overtone. Sweet, seamless and penetrating on the palate, offering intense black currant and cherry-vanilla flavors that are given spine by a core of juicy acidity. Rich yet energetic in style, showing firm closing thrust and slowly building, polished tannins.

The 2017 The Big Game checks in as a blend of 73% Cabernet Sauvignon, 21% Syrah, and 6% Petit Verdot. It offers a deep purple color as well as more spicy notes of blackcurrants, chocolate, dried herbs, spicy oak, and new leather. Elegant and medium to full-bodied, this is another age-worthy wine that will have 10-15 years of prime drinking.
